Former Murrayfield Racers forward Dave Shyiak will be the main speaker at Scottish Ice Hockey’s coaching seminar being held in Dundee at the end of July.
Shyiak will be accompanied over the weekend by Great Britain National Development Head Coach, Tony Hand, along with Ice Hockey UK’s Child Protection Head, Charles Dacres.
Great Britain U16 Head Coach, Steven Lynch, will also be part of a programme that will provide excellent learning and networking opportunities for Scotland’s coaches.
Shyiak has over 25 years of coaching and hockey experience at different levels of hockey. He is currently the Associate Head Coach of Western Michigan University a Division 1 College hockey programme in USA.
He started as a head coach in Western Canada at the Junior A level with Kimberley Dynamiters and Merritt Centennials from 1993-1995.
Shyiak went on to become an assistant coach with Northern Michigan University (NCAA) for 10 years, before becoming the head coach for the University of Alaska Anchorage (NCAA) for eight years.
In 2013, Shyiak became an amateur scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs evaluating players for the NHL Draft. He joined the Western Michigan University coaching staff the following year.
During his time coaching in the college ranks Shyiak helped recruit and develop over 30 NHL draft picks and six NHLers including current player Jay Beagle of the Washington Capitals.
Internationally, Shyiak coached a North American Select Team that competed at the Universal Junior A Players tourney in Tampere, Finland during 2000 and 2001.
In 2010, he was also invited to participate as a coach for Sweden’s National Camp in Norrtalje. The camp was used to select national team players who would go on and represent Sweden with the U18 and U20 teams.
Shyiak was also invited as a guest coach for the Washington Capitals’ Development camp and was able to work with their draft picks and prospects. He has served USA hockey in various roles such as instructor, coach and evaluator.
In the last four years, Shyiak has been a coach/evaluator for the state of Michigan for the U16 and U17 USA Hockey Select Festival.
Shyiak’s playing career started with his youth hockey in Brandon, Manitoba before moving on to play two years of Junior A Hockey in Humboldt, Saskatchewan winning two league titles.
He then received a scholarship to play at Northern Michigan University for four years where he won a National Championship in 1991.
Shyiak then joined the Murrayfield Racers of the British Hockey League for the 1991/92 season.
