Great Britain U18 kept their promotion hopes alive with a 3-2 victory over Lithuania at the World Championship (Division 2A) tournament in Tallinn on Friday.
GB must now beat Korea on the final day and hope Poland lose to Australia today or hosts Estonia tomorrow.
Ben Solder opened the scoring for GB in the 14th minute, but Lukas Washco’s neat backhand finish after 25 minutes brought Lithuania level.
GB regained the lead a little over two minutes later when Mason Biddulph chipped the puck over the netminder on the powerplay on a doorstep rebound.
Lithuania then hit back with a powerplay goal of their own through Timonas Mazulis’ shot from the left circle in the 33rd minute.
But GB ensured a 3-2 second period lead as Liam Kirk cleverly touched in his third goal of the tournament after a pass by Finlay Ulrick after 36 minutes.
GB pushed for another goal which would have helped them if they finished on level points with Lithuania and Poland, but they were unable to beat Laurynas Lubys.
Britain return to action on Saturday when they face Korea (face-off 2.30pm UK time).
