Scotland U17 took part in the inaugural Spring Classic at Swindon last weekend, with a seven team round robin featuring the Conference sides plus Okanagan Academy and Great Britain U16.
Supported by generous sponsorship from Warrior Hockey UK, the event saw 22 matches in just over two days giving the top age junior players more games against quality opposition.
The event follows on from the successful U11 Conference Series and Winter Classic for U13 and U15 sides, which means the players are playing more games of a better standard to aid their development.
Scotland began the event with a 4-3 victory over North, before losing 5-2 against eventual tournament winners Midlands. A 2-2 draw with GB U16 rounded off their games on Saturday.
A 5-1 victory over South West put Scotland in with a chance of qualifying for the final, but defeats against Okanagan (3-5) and South East (1-5) ended their interest in the tournament.
Midlands went on to claim the trophy with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over North.
JLMC chair, Jacqueline Pye, said: “It was a very busy couple of days, but the top age players deserved their chance to play an event like this and they made the most of the opportunity.
“The games were keenly contested and overall quite close with only a couple of big scores. It was great for the Conference sides to play competitive games, and from our side we enjoyed having Great Britain U16 here to give them a meaningful tournament to help their development too.”
The Conference Weekend will take place at iceSheffield from Friday 25th to Monday 28th May.
The event begins with Scotland versus England U19 international on the first day, with the Conference games starting early on Saturday.
