Solway Sharks U20 see off North Ayrshire, U12 bounce back in Belfast

Solway Sharks U20 welcomed their rivals from North Ayrshire to Dumfries Ice Bowl for their latest league game.

Lewis Houston (4), Liam Stenton, Lewis McEwan, Aidan Nicol and Scott Henderson got the goals for the Sharks.

Coach Jamie Thomson said: “We achieved a comfortable 8-2 victory against North Ayr, which sets us up needing two wins from our home and away fixtures against Fife next weekend to win the league.

“It’s something that hasn’t been done here for a very long time, but we have the talent to do it. We just have to have the commitment for the final push after getting this far.”

Solway’s U12 team have had a busy couple of weekends, playing back-to-back away fixtures.

The young Sharks put in a valiant performance against Lanarkshire, but the home side proved too strong and ran out comfortable winners. Cassie McGregor’s unassisted strike was Solway’s only goal of the game.

Team manager Sam Rae said: “The team worked hard for the whole game, and the scoreline does not really reflect the amount of effort the players put in.

“There were many positives from the game for this developing team to take forward into the remainder of the season.”

Solway’s second away¬†fixture took them to Belfast to¬†face the Junior Giants, with the trip being partly funded by a grant from the Year of Young People 2018.

Owen Rae (2), Ewan Duignan (2), Tomas Vyrostek (2) and Tony Ho got the goals to secure a 7-4 success.

“The under 12s were excellent, working as a team the whole game,” said Thomson.

“This is the best performance I’ve seen them put in all season and they fully deserved their win in Belfast. It was hard to pick a stand out player as they were all so good.

“We will continue to help the players to learn and develop their skills, and these kind of results will become a regular occurrence.”

Solway Sharks Juniors are currently recruiting new players. Anyone interested in playing ice hockey should contact Dumfries Ice Bowl on 01387 251300 for details of learn to play sessions, which take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4.00pm and Saturdays at 10.30am.
