Dumfries Ice Bowl will stage the biggest event in its 21 year history when it hosts World Championship Ice Hockey in December.
The Great Britain Under 20s Men’s Team will compete in the International Ice Hockey Federation’s Group 1 B tournament, and play against France, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan and the Ukraine.
The tournament takes place between Monday December 9 and Sunday December 15. The ice hockey promises to be of great quality, and hopes are high that large crowds will turn out to cheer on Great Britain and see many of the future stars of the mega-rich, world renowned leagues of North America and Russia.
Great Britain will play their fixtures at 8pm each evening at the Ice Bowl during the course of the week, which is bound to capture the public’s imagination. Local interest is increased too, as Solway Sharks coach Martin Grubb will be in the technical zone as the Great Britain Assistant Coach.
Martin has led the Solway Sharks to the Northern League title and play-off titles as well as recently winning the National Ice Hockey League North League and Cup. Martin has previously acted as Great Britain Assistant Coach at Under 18 level in a tournament in Estonia and was the National Coach for the Under 20s when they participated in the hugely prestigious Alexei Cherepanov Cup in Lithuania this year.
Colin Smyth, the Council’s Events Champion, said: “This World Championship is a great opportunity for sports fans and families to come out and see what a brilliant and engrossing live sport ice hockey can be. It’s important to the buzz of the tournament that Great Britain is competing, and I hope we can attract new fans to the Ice Bowl to get right behind our team.
“The Council is working closely with schools and driving forward a major marketing campaign to make World Championship Ice Hockey in December a must see event.”
Andy French, General Secretary of Ice Hockey UK, added: “Ice Hockey UK is delighted with the assistance that we have received from Dumfries and Galloway Council to help us stage this event. Ice Hockey is strong in Dumfries with the development work done by the Council and the Solway Sharks, and all the ingredients are in place for a great week of live, top class ice hockey.”
