Scottish Ice Hockey 23/4 Season: What to Expect

The Scottish Ice Hockey community is buzzing with excitement as we approach the 23/4 season. After the resounding success of the new SNL format which introduced 2 home and 2 away games, fans and players alike are eagerly awaiting the upcoming matches.

Last season Aberdeen Lynx took the SNL title, the first time in their club’s history and was pipped to the Playoff and Scottish Cup win by the Dundee Comets. But it really could have been any number of the teams making it through given how close most games were.

Clubs saw an increase in the number of fans attending games and the Lynx vs Comets sold out league winning game has had over 6k views and was streamed live with hundreds of fans watching. Which is great for the growth of our sport in Scotland.

Scott Campbell from Scottish Ice Hockey said, “I think I am the same as the rest of the people involved around the league in really looking forward to the 23/4 Season. The new SNL format, a great playoff weekend at Murrayfield, and Scottish Cup in Aberdeen, all made last season one of the most competitive we’ve ever had.

Delighted that we are retaining the 2 home and 2 away format, 3 of our clubs have engaged in a newly reformed Northern League with Blackburn Hawks, which is hopefully the start of more potential cross border competition.

After the success of last season, our playoff weekend will again be held at Murrayfield, thanks to Scott Neil and his team for all their work to make this happen.

The amount of games now being played will only improve our league, and give a real pathway for our junior to aspire to. We have a seriously competitive league where no result is guaranteed on any given night.

With some new players arriving from NIHL teams and from other areas too, it just highlights the growth we have witnessed. While there are still challenges, such as the limited ice time available to the Dundee clubs, it was pleasing to be involved in the collaborative approach the clubs all took in overcoming this obstacle.

Finally, I’d just like to wish all teams and their players the best of luck for the upcoming season, and look forward to seeing you all around the rinks.”

With the first games being played this weekend, the teams will be keen to make their mark and build from their success of last year. Don’t miss out on all the action, click the links below to add the senior pictures to your calendar.

North meets South in National Development finale.

We are excited to announce the schedule and ticket release for the upcoming Scotland V England Junior Games.

The games will take place on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th of May at Dumfries Ice Bowl and feature players at u14 and U16 age groups.

SIH Head of Hockey Operations, Jamie Thomson, said, “ I’m delighted that these games are going ahead. I’d like to thank the EIHA and their lead on this project Seth Bennett, for the proactive approach to making it happen.

This is a great event for us to sign off this season with. We relaunch our national programme in September this year and more events like this will become a regular occurrence. This year has proven to be a real test at national level, lack of ice time, lack of tournaments to attend, cost of travel etc. So pulling this together is a big win and I’m sure the kids are going to love it.

The tournament will consist of Scotland playing England 3 times over the 2 days in full stopped clock games. Any draws will feature 3v3 in overtime and penalty shots, as we look to replicate the senior level as much as possible. The 4th game for each age group will be a very interesting watch, as we merge team Scotland and England together and draft 2 teams that will go head to head on Sunday afternoon to close the event.”

Seth Bennett, EIHA England V Scotland Series lead, commented, “ This is a great opportunity for the players to play in a really competitive England V Scotland Series. It has been fantastic to work with Jamie and SIH to create an event which is going to bring 12 periods of competitive hockey for each age group”

I know the players are excited about this opportunity to play against Scotland and hopefully we are going to see some really completive hockey over the two days”

We now move our attention to the Scottish Cup finals day being hosted in Aberdeen on Saturday.  From under 12s right through SNL finalists competing for their last chance at silverware this season, it’s sure to be another highlight of what has been an incredibly successful and competitive year for the sport in Scotland.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Last chance to make it to the Playoffs.

This weekend in Scottish ice hockey, fans can expect some thrilling matches as the teams compete for their spot in the Playoff weekend and Aberdeen and Paisley battle it out in a Scottish Cup semi-final. With two pieces of silverware still up for grabs, the pressure is on for the teams to perform at their best.

The 2nd leg of the Play-off 1/4 finals will take place this weekend, providing the teams with their last chance to secure their place in the playoffs.

One of the standout fixtures is between the Kirkcaldy Kestrels and the Dundee Comets as both teams have been on excellent form recently. The Comets did finished higher in the league table and managed to win the 1st leg last weekend 6-4, giving them a slight advantage going into the game.

In another exciting match, the Kilmarnock Thunder will travel east to Murrayfield to take on the Edinburgh Capitals. Thunder managed to clinch a win with a 6-4 score against the Capitals last weekend, despite their lower position in the league. The Capitals will be eager to get a comfortable win this time around and secure their spot at Murrayfield next weekend.

The Aberdeen Lynx will also be looking to maintain their good form this evening at Auchenharvie, where they play North Ayrshire Wild after a convincing 14-2 win against them last weekend in Aberdeen.

With the high level of play from all the teams this season it’s given the young NA Wild team, who have struggled at times, a huge amount of valuable game time against some well drilled and experienced teams.

The Paisley Pirates have a massive weekend, playing host to the Dundee Tigers at Braehead tonight before taking on the Aberdeen Lynx tomorrow in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup at Murrayfield.

The Pirates managed to bag a close win against the Tigers last weekend, and both sides finished only one point apart in the league.

Pirates Coach, Ian Turley, said, “We are looking forward to the weekend ahead. It’s no secret that it’s the biggest weekend of the season for us playing in the 2nd leg of the quarter tonight and the semi final of the Scottish Cup tomorrow.

We managed to scrape past the Tigers last week but our games against them this year have generally been really close so I’d imagine it’s going to go to the wire again.

Tomorrow sees us play away to the Lynx in Edinburgh which is a little different from the norm. It’ll be a strange encounter having both fans there as travelling support. Games against the Lynx this year have also been tight but I’d imagine most people on the outside will favour the Lynx to win with them being league champions.

At this stage it doesn’t get any bigger than this and it’s all on the line.”

The winner of the semi-final between the Pirates and Lynx will take on the Dundee Comets in the Scottish Cup Final, which is being held in Aberdeen on the 15th of April.

With so much at stake and several teams in good form, this weekend’s ice hockey action is not to be missed.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: The race for a place in the Playoffs begins

All teams will be looking to secure a win and gain some momentum going into the final stages of the season.

The Aberdeen Lynx will be the favourites going into their game against North Ayrshire Wild having already secured the league title. But they will be wary of their opponents, who caused an upset last season when they scuppered the Lynx’s chances in the Playoffs.

North Ayr Wild Coach, Domenico DeSimone said, “Our team is mostly made up of u19s and young players and although it has been a hard season I couldn’t be more proud of them.

They have stuck with it week after week, game after game, and have committed everything to us, me and the jersey.  They have never let us down and I am so proud of what they have achieved at such young ages.

As a coach I feel so lucky to be able to work with such a fantastic group of guys.

It’s always a great atmosphere in Aberdeen and fantastic experience for our young team. It’s a clean slate going into the Playoffs and I’m confident the guys will do everything that is asked of them.”

The Edinburgh Capitals will be facing a challenge in Kilmarnock Thunder, who have proven they can be formidable opponents. The Capitals will be looking to make up for their narrow miss in the league and gain an advantage in the playoff race.

The match between the Comets and the Kestrels promises to be an exhilarating encounter, with both teams in excellent form.

Kestrels coach Steven Wishart said, “The guys have been on a good solid run of late, taking it one game at a time with the goal of having a good end to the season.

We’ve been building good momentum to take into the play-offs which is what we’ve been asking of the group.

Our goal, of course, I’m sure like any other team, is to try and make the play-off-final weekend in Edinburgh. That’s what we’ll be aiming to do and our focus has been on the play-offs for a while now. That’s our main aim, to try and end the season on a high.”

Finally, the game between the Paisley Pirates and Dundee Tigers is set to be a physical encounter, with both teams known for their physical play. It will be a close game, with both teams evenly matched and looking to secure a win.

Overall, it promises to be an exciting weekend of ice hockey, with plenty of close encounters and thrilling action on the ice. The teams will be giving their all to secure a win and advance to the next stage of the playoffs.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: League title too close to call

Get ready for an exciting and nail-biting final weekend of the ice hockey league, as the top two teams battle it out for the title.

Aberdeen is currently sitting on top of the league table, three points clear of Capitals, who have a double header to play, giving them the chance to snatch the title.

The two teams have already faced each other three times this season, with Aberdeen coming out on top in two of those games.

Aberdeen coach Jordan Leyden said, “As disappointing as it was not to get the results at the weekend I believe we played pretty well in both games.

Looking at this weekend, what an advert it is for the league! We obviously want to come out the other end with the result going our way, which would be amazing for our loyal fans to be a part of. For a neutral looking at the league, you’d be hard pushed to find one more competitive and as exciting as this season has been.”

The upcoming game between the two is already sold out, but fans can still catch the action through the Lynx YouTube channel, LynxTV.

Of course there has been nothing certain in this league this year and there are a couple of other scenarios which, theoretically could see the Paisley Pirates lift the league title. Right now it looks like a two horse race but no result should be taken for granted in the 22/23 Scottish National League. One thing is clear though. If the Lynx win tonight in Aberdeen they will be crowned 22/23 League champions.

The final placements this weekend will determine the lineup for the quarter-finals of the Playoffs. Teams will play a home and away game ahead of the the Playoff weekend on April 8th & 9th at Murrayfield.

Alan Blakely Photography

North Ayrshire Wild will also be taking on Kilmarnock Thunder today in Auchenharvie before travelling tomorrow to play the Capitals at Murrayfield.

If Capitals win today then their game against North Ayrshire Wild tomorrow will be critical, the league really could be decided by the last game of the season. It’s definately going to be an exciting weekend of ice hockey, with so much at stake and so many teams fighting for their spot in the playoffs.

It’s been an incredibly close season, with any one of the teams able to take a win on the night.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Aberdeen Fight for League Victory with Double Header

Get ready for an exciting weekend of ice hockey as four games are set to take place. All eyes will be on the league leaders, Aberdeen Lynx, who are three points ahead at the top of the table and have a double-header ahead of them.

Their first game on Saturday is a home fixture against Dundee Comets, who have won their last four games and will pose stiff competition for the Lynx. Currently sitting fourth in the league with 33 points, the Comets will be looking to climb up the standings and cause an upset against the league leaders.

The last time thee two teams met in Dundee Aberdeen took home a close win on the double point game.

Comets coach Richard Hartman said,  “It’s going to be hard game. Aberdeen are going to fight for the league win in front of a full house. It’s a smaller rink than Dundee, so it’s going to be more physical.

We are prepared, we have been playing really well and have a full squad. The only person missing is Mikey Ireland as he is recovering from a concussion.

We want to win for sure. We lost touch with the top of the table but still want to play well before the playoffs.

We need to do all the little things well and stick together like we did the last five games. We are playing really good, but Aberdeen will do everything to push for the title, so we have to play hard.”

The Lynx’s second game on Sunday is an away fixture against Kirkcaldy Kestrels, who have won their last five games and are in sixth place in the league with 28 points the same as Dundee Tigers.

On Aberdeen’s last visit to Fife Arena the Kestrels bagged the win in overtime 6-5. But with such close shorelines it’s all to play for.

With only one more league game after this weekend for the Lynx, this is a massive weekend for Aberdeen, and the league title could be won this weekend, depending on how the games play out.

In other matches, Edinburgh Capitals will be playing Dundee Tigers at Murrayfield. The Capitals are in second place in the league, just three points behind Aberdeen and eight points ahead of the Tigers.

With time running out the Capitals will be looking to secure a win and close the gap on the league leaders.

Capitals coach Stephen Lynch commented on their game ahead, “It’s a must win game that we have to be ready for. We obviously have one eye on other games happening around us but they’re out with our control. We have to focus on ourselves and make sure we have another two points at the end of the night.

Dundee are a tough team to play against who were high up the league for a long period. Recently they’ve slipped a little bit but we can’t underestimate them or they’ll make us pay.”

Kirkcaldy Kestrels will also have a double-header this weekend, with their first game on Saturday with an away game against North Ayrshire Wild.

North Ayrshire are 8th in the league with just eight points. The Kestrels will be hoping to secure a win and boost their position in the league to overtake the Dundee Tigers.

With the playoffs only one month away, the outcome of this weekend’s games could have a significant impact on the placing of the teams.

The race for the top spot in the league is incredibly close, and with so much at stake, this weekend’s ice hockey matches are sure to be thrilling and unpredictable. Don’t miss out on the action!

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Teams Battle for Playoff Spots

We’re into the last month of games before the playoffs and this next couple of weeks are going to be make or break.

In what has been one of the most competitive seasons in Scottish Ice Hockey the teams are gearing up for the final push with a Saturday night of SNL action.

Scottish Ice Hockey Chairperson, John Colley said, “The Scottish National League has been fantastic this year. One Goal, Overtime and Penalty Shot deciding games have been plentiful.

With the league as close as it is, and league positioning being very important when it comes to playoffs, we can be certain that the compete level will continue right up to the last game of the season. It’s a great advert of Scottish Ice Hockey and home grown talent.”

Paisley Pirates will be heading North to take on league leaders Aberdeen Lynx at home. The Lynx who are 5 points clear will be looking to keep their lead with having only 3 more league games to play.

The Lynx won their last three league games, but at their last encounter with the Pirates, the scoreline was tight with the Lynx narrowly winning 2-1 in overtime. The two points up for grabs would certainly ease the pressure on the Aberdeen side.

Sitting on 33 points, the same as the Dundee Comets are Paisley Pirates, who will be equally as hungry for the win to knock the Comets off 3rd spot. This hard hitting team will be sure to bring their A game to Aberdeen along with their great travelling support.

With both teams playing with high energy and intensity it promises to be a physical encounter with plenty of action along the boards.

Sitting 2nd in the league table are Edinburgh Capitals, who will be making their way to Auchenharvie tonight to take on North Ayrshire Wild. After losing their last two games they will be seeking to turn things around and get back their form.

NA Wild are 8th in the league table, but last time these two met in November the Caps won 5-3.  In their last two games which were against the Paisley Pirates, the scores were close with only two points in it. If they can find their stride against the well drilled Edinburgh side who know what the final score could be?

Kirkcaldy Kestrels will play their penultimate home game of the season against Kilmarnock Thunder at home at the Fife Arena this evening.

Sitting 6th in the league the Kestrels will be looking to use their home ice advantage, and to add to their recent series of wins in front of their passionate fans.

Although Kilmarnock Thunder may not have the same level of success as the Kestrels this season, they are a hard-working team with a never-say-die attitude. Thunder will be looking to cause an upset relying on their teamwork and determination.

With both teams giving it their all to come away with the win. Fans can look forward to an action-packed game.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Could this weekend see some changes?

The weekend could see some changes at the top of the league table with 4 games being played.

The Paisley Pirates have another double header this weekend with an away game on Saturday against Kilmarnock Thunder and their last league home game of the season on Sunday against Kirkcaldy Kestrels.

Currently sitting 4th in the league table at 30 points, just 1 point behind the Comets and 3 points behind the Edinburgh Capitals, a double win this weekend could see them being contenders at the top of the table.

With zones and corners being tight on the Galleon ice pad giving players less time in the space, Ian Turley’s team will be looking for a good result against the unpredictable Kilmarnock side.

The Kirkcaldy Kestrels have won their last three league games even bagging an overtime win against league leaders Aberdeen Lynx. 6 points behind the Pirates they will be looking to narrow that gap.

The Capitals and Comets will also be going head to head at Murrayfield.  The Caps are just 3 points clear of the Comets and sitting in 2nd place.

The Edinburgh side will be hungry for a win after their defeat last weekend against Aberdeen Lynx, but with both Comets and Caps having won 4 out of their last 5 games it will be sure to be a tight scoreline.

It’s the battle of the big cats in Aberdeen on Saturday with the Tigers making the journey north to the Linx Ice Arena.

Jordan Leyden’s team will be keen to bag the two points for a bit of breathing space as the Capitals have been hot on their heels at the top of the league table.

At their last game the Tigers took a 8-3 win against Aberdeen and will be looking to replicate that scoreline and claw their way up the table.
