SNL REVIEW: Happy travelling for road teams in weekend openers

The SNL began at the weekend with all three teams travelling away from home getting their first points of the season.

The puck dropped on the new season and with goals galore, it was entertaining for the fans who made those journeys at the expense of those home supporters, perhaps left feeling a little miserable.

In Aberdeen, Lynx were hopeful of keeping the points in their part of the North East, but despite a first period lead, ended up on the end of a 5-2 loss to Dundee Comets.

Gary Kelly’s opening goal on the powerplay gave them a lead after 16 minutes, but was cancelled out by Ben Brown before Jonathan Hogan restored the home side’s advantage.

Comets overturned the deficit in the second with Stephen Eccles scoring shorthanded then Brown adding his second of the game for Richard Hartmann’s team to take the lead.

Dundee took advantage of another powerplay, with Michael Ireland adding to the tally before John Dolan capped a decent night with a 52nd minute goal, adding to two assists he picked up earlier in the night.

League champions Kirkcaldy Kestrels made the trip to Auchenharvie to begin the defence of their title at North Ayrshire Wild and started their new campaign off in impressive style with an 8-0 victory.

Conor Duncan’s double set them on their win with two goals in the first period before Andy Finlay and George Pitcaithly doubled their lead before the first break.

Further goals came from Rolands Dietlavs, with a hat-trick and Jamie Crawford made it a good night for the Kestrels, who face the Comets next.

Saturday’s other game also took place in Ayrshire as Kilmarnock Thunder hosted Dundee Tigers and while they put four goals on the board, Tigers claimed the points by netting eight.

The visitors get themselves ahead through John Gordon before a quickfire double from Jack Henderson and Robbie Hill put them safely in pole position, with Gordon’s second adding a fourth.

Thunder showed there was life in them as Innes Gallacher pulled one back on the powerplay with two more goals coming from Connor McNulty and Ronan McCready to close the gap to one.

However Tigers upped the ante with Callum Hill, Hill, with his second and one from Andrew Henderson all but making sure of the points.

Gallacher’s second for Kilmarnock gave them something to cheer about in the third, but Rio Page rounded off the night with Tigers’ eighth.
