Scottish Ice Hockey Weekend Preview
This weekend, the spotlight shines on Aberdeen as the Aberdeen Lynx gear up to face the Dundee Rockets in the Scottish Cup semi-final second leg. It’s the only competitive seniors’ game in Scottish ice hockey this weekend, and it promises to be a thrilling encounter with everything to play for.
Both teams are fighting for a coveted spot in the Scottish Cup Final, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. The season-long rivalry between these two sides has been nothing short of dramatic. Their league clashes were both nail-biters, each game stretching into overtime, with both teams managing one victory apiece. The first leg of the semi-final last weekend continued the pattern of close contests, as the Lynx narrowly edged out a 4-3 win in Dundee. It was a fierce battle from start to finish, with neither team giving an inch.
Heading into this weekend, Aberdeen holds a slender one-goal lead—enough to give the home side a slight advantage but far from a secure margin. The Linx Ice Arena will be packed to the rafters with a sell-out crowd, creating an electrifying atmosphere that could give the Lynx the extra boost they need. Adding to the excitement, the game marks the Lynx’s Christmas Game, featuring the much-loved Teddy Toss, where fans can throw plush toys onto the ice to support Abernecessities, a local charity.
We caught up with Rockets head coach Jeff Hutchins to hear his thoughts on the game ahead, “We have to go to Aberdeen on Saturday and win by two goals to move on to the final. Reflecting on last week’s game, I think we did a lot of good things. We heavily outshot them, but we struggled to finish and generate enough offense.
We took some penalties that Aberdeen capitalised on. Credit to them—they came back from 2–0 down to take the lead.
That said, we’re feeling positive about the game ahead. We need to focus on playing to our strengths, executing our game plan, and staying out of the penalty box. Every time we play them, penalties seem to hurt us, and we can’t afford that on Saturday.
It should be a great match with an exciting atmosphere—two of the best teams in the league going head-to-head. Hopefully, we can bring our best game on Saturday and progress to the final, no matter who the opponent is.”
With so much on the line, both teams will leave it all out on the ice. Will the Lynx hold their ground and secure their place in the final, or will the Rockets ignite and snatch victory? One thing’s for certain—this clash is set to be an unforgettable night of Scottish ice hockey.
