Highlanders Lift Inaugural Recreational Shield at Dumfries Ice Bowl

The weekend of April 18th brought something new to the Scottish Ice Hockey recreational calendar, as the inaugural Shield tournament took place at Dumfries Ice Bowl.

Designed as a standalone end-of-season competition, the Shield gave teams not involved in promotion or relegation a chance to finish their campaign on the ice. The appetite for it was clear from the outset, with 12 teams from across the country converging on Dumfries Ice Bowl for a packed weekend of hockey that blended competitive edge with the spirit of the recreational game.

The group stages set the tone early, with little separating the teams across both pools. In Group A, the Mariners and Edinburgh Knights progressed after a series of tight contests, while Group B saw the Highland Capitals and Highlanders advance in equally competitive fashion.

That edge carried straight into the semi-finals. The Highland Capitals secured their place in the final with a 3–1 win over Edinburgh Knights in a game that remained close throughout. The second semi-final needed even more to separate the sides, with the Mariners and Highlanders tied at 1–1 before the Highlanders edged it in a penalty shootout.

The final brought together the two Group B qualifiers and followed the same pattern—tight, competitive, and decided by fine margins. The Highland Capitals pushed throughout, but the Highlanders held firm. Backed by strong goaltending and a disciplined defensive performance, they edged a 1–0 win to lift the inaugural Shield.

Across the weekend, the tournament delivered exactly what it set out to do—competitive hockey, strong participation, and a platform for teams to round off their season on the ice. On this showing, the Shield looks set to become a regular feature in the recreational calendar.
