Playoff Race Intensifies as SNL Season Enters Final Stretch

The Scottish National League season is entering its decisive phase with five games scheduled this weekend as teams continue their push for playoff positions.

While the regular season is nearing its conclusion, there will still be two further weekends of league action after this one, meaning every result now carries increasing importance as the standings begin to take their final shape.

The schedule includes double-headers for North Ayrshire Wild and Paisley Pirates, while several matchups across the weekend could influence positions across the table.

North Ayrshire Wild v Paisley Pirates

Saturday

North Ayrshire Wild begin a challenging double-header weekend as they host Paisley Pirates in what will be the final meeting between the two sides this season.

Pirates have taken victory in all three previous meetings between the sides this season and arrive as favourites once again.

Wild still have four league games remaining, including both fixtures this weekend, meaning they still have opportunities to move in the standings. With Solway Sharks currently ahead of them, the Ayrshire side will view these remaining games as a chance to close the gap before the regular season concludes.

Pirates, meanwhile, sit in the upper half of the standings and will be keen to secure another two points as the race for final league positions continues.

A physical and fast-paced contest is expected, but both sides have shown increased discipline this season, keeping their focus on the game and avoiding costly penalties.

Whitley Warriors v Kirkcaldy Kestrels

Saturday

Another closely anticipated matchup takes place in Whitley Bay as Whitley Warriors host Kirkcaldy Kestrels.

The teams have produced some tightly contested games this season, with neither side able to establish clear dominance. Kestrels have taken one win, Warriors another, while a third meeting went all the way to overtime before being decided.

With the season series so evenly balanced, predicting the outcome of this one is far from straightforward.

Warriors will be aiming to collect maximum points as they look to maintain their position in the upper part of the standings, while Kestrels continue pushing to strengthen their playoff position.

Given how closely contested the games between these sides have been this season, this has all the ingredients for another entertaining and unpredictable contest.

Aberdeen Lynx v Kilmarnock Thunder

Saturday

Aberdeen Lynx host Kilmarnock Thunder for the fourth and final meeting between the sides this season.

Lynx have taken the win in the previous three matchups, including a 16–4 victory in Kilmarnock last weekend. While the final scoreline suggested a comfortable result, Thunder made things difficult early on before Lynx gradually took control through the second period.

While their league position could still shift on paper, Lynx will largely be focused on maintaining performance levels as attention begins to turn towards the upcoming playoffs.

This weekend’s game also marks the second-last home league fixture of the season in Aberdeen, with just three league games remaining before the regular season concludes.

Thunder, meanwhile, will be determined to challenge for a result as time begins to run out in their search for a league win, while Lynx will look to deliver another strong performance in front of the home crowd.

Paisley Pirates v Solway Sharks

Sunday

Paisley Pirates return to action on Sunday as they host Solway Sharks in the second game of their weekend double-header.

Pirates have taken the win in each of the teams’ previous meetings this season and will look to continue that run on home ice.

For Sharks, the margin for error is narrowing. With only three league games remaining, every point becomes increasingly important as they look to maintain their position ahead of North Ayrshire Wild, who remain within reach in the standings.

Sharks will likely need a strong roster and disciplined performance if they are to challenge Pirates in what could be another physical contest.

Dundee Rockets v North Ayrshire Wild

Sunday

North Ayrshire Wild complete their double-header weekend with a difficult trip to face Dundee Rockets.

Rockets currently have more games remaining than any other team in the league, giving them a significant opportunity to influence how the final standings develop over the closing weeks of the season.

With five games still to play, Rockets have a potential ten points available and are well placed to challenge for second place, with Whitley Warriors currently just ahead of them. While that shift may not happen immediately this weekend, Rockets remain in a strong position to move up the standings before the regular season concludes.

The result could also have implications at the very top of the table. If Rockets were to drop any points — even through an overtime loss — Edinburgh Capitals would secure the league title despite not playing this weekend.

Wild know they face a difficult challenge — the sides last met with Rockets recording a 14–4 win — but they will be hoping to produce a stronger performance as they continue their push to close the gap on Solway Sharks in the standings.
