Scottish Cup Semi-Final

Aberdeen Lynx 2 – 6 Whitley Warriors (Agg: 6–10)

Sunday night’s Scottish Cup semi-final second leg saw Aberdeen Lynx host Whitley Warriors with the tie finely balanced after the first leg ended 4–4. The return leg was played in front of a sold-out crowd in Aberdeen, with a place in the Scottish Cup final on the line.

It was the visitors who seized control of the contest early. Midway through the first period Whitley struck three times in less than four minutes to take firm command of the game.

Cameron Ware opened the scoring before Dean Holland quickly doubled the advantage. Oliver Jardine then added a third moments later, leaving Lynx facing an immediate uphill battle.

Falling three goals behind against an experienced Warriors side made the challenge extremely difficult, although Lynx worked to steady themselves through the remainder of the period.

The task became even tougher early in the second when Ware scored his second of the night with an unassisted effort to extend the lead to four.

Lynx continued to push and eventually found a way onto the scoreboard midway through the second period. Josh Purvis worked the puck back to Jaydn Baxter, who fired a shot across the Warriors goaltender and into the net to give the home side a lift.

For a spell the goal brought renewed energy to Lynx and the crowd as they tried to build momentum and reduce the deficit further. However, Whitley responded quickly to halt that progress.

Philip Edgar extended the visitors’ lead with a power-play goal before Dean Holland added another to stretch the advantage further and leave Lynx with too much ground to recover.

Despite the scoreline the home side continued to battle until the closing stages and were rewarded with a late goal when Zac Thomson found the net to reduce the margin slightly.

But the outcome had already been settled and Whitley skated away with a 6–2 victory, securing their place in the Scottish Cup final in their first season competing in the Scottish National League.

Scottish National League Round-Up

With the regular season entering its final weeks, four Scottish National League games took place over the weekend. While points were added to the standings, there was no movement in the league positions.

Kilmarnock Thunder 4 – 16 Aberdeen Lynx

Saturday evening began with Aberdeen Lynx travelling south to face Kilmarnock Thunder.

Thunder made the brighter start, with Fraser Turner opening the scoring unassisted in the first period to give the home side the early lead. For a short spell the hosts threatened to make life uncomfortable for Lynx, but the visitors soon began to settle into the game.

Once Lynx found their rhythm the balance of the contest quickly shifted. Their puck movement began to stretch the Thunder defence and chances began to arrive more regularly.

By the second period Lynx were firmly in control and the goals soon followed. Conor Duncan, Aaron Thomson and Jaydn Baxter each recorded hat-tricks as Lynx pulled clear on the scoreboard.

Thunder struggled to contain the pace of the Lynx attack while the visitors continued to move the puck effectively and convert their chances.

As the scoreline widened frustration began to creep into the Thunder side, with the home team accumulating a substantial number of penalty minutes throughout the evening. Lynx remained disciplined, taking just a single five-minute penalty late in the game when Jadon Lawrie was penalised.

The closing stages also provided a notable moment for one of Lynx’s younger players. Eighteen-year-old netminder Kyle Joiner stepped onto the ice for the final period, marking his first appearance in the Scottish National League. Joiner handled the moment confidently as Lynx comfortably saw out the game.

North Ayrshire Wild 4 – 13 Dundee Rockets

Dundee Rockets recorded a convincing road victory over North Ayrshire Wild, collecting two important points as the race towards the top of the table continues.

The first period remained competitive with just a single goal separating the sides. Michael Ireland scored the only goal of the opening frame to give Rockets a narrow lead.

The game shifted decisively in the second period as Dundee moved through the gears, scoring six times to take control of the contest.

Wild responded more strongly in the third period, managing to find the net four times and showing improved attacking play. However, Rockets continued to create the greater number of chances and maintained their advantage on the scoreboard.

Rio Page led the scoring for Dundee with a hat-trick, while Wild were unable to recover from the difficult second period.

Edinburgh Capitals 5 – 1 Kirkcaldy Kestrels

Edinburgh Capitals moved closer to securing the league title following their home victory over Kirkcaldy Kestrels.

The Capitals made an immediate impact in front of their home crowd. Their captain Joel Gautschi opened the scoring just 25 seconds into the game before Joe Lynch doubled the lead little more than a minute later.

The second period remained tight for long stretches before Capitals added their third goal in the final moments of the period on the power play.

Kestrels briefly reduced the deficit early in the third period when Cole Giannandrea scored with the man advantage to make it 3–1. Despite a competitive final period that included a number of penalties for both sides, Capitals added two further goals to secure the win and move within a single point of confirming the league title.

Solway Sharks 2 – 7 Kirkcaldy Kestrels

Following their defeat the previous evening, Kirkcaldy Kestrels returned to the ice on Sunday with a strong response against Solway Sharks SNL in Dumfries.

Solway took the early lead through Andrew Craik less than five minutes into the game. Despite creating opportunities, Kestrels initially struggled to find a way past Sharks netminder Harry Campbell.

The momentum shifted in the second period as Kirkcaldy increased the pressure and scored three goals, including two from Finley King.

Kestrels continued to build on that advantage in the third period, scoring four more goals while Sharks managed one in reply. Two of Kirkcaldy’s goals came while short-handed during a lively and physical closing period.

With only a handful of games remaining in the Scottish National League season, the race for final positions and playoff match-ups continues to build as teams head towards the closing weeks of the campaign.
