NEWS: SIH Goaltending Programme details announced

Scottish Ice Hockey are pleased to announce further details of our new Goaltending programme.

Taking place at Dumfries Ice Bowl throughout the season, it’s an opportunity for young goalies to work with top coaches in the country and give them the chance to develop their game.

Five netminding coaches have been brought in to take the programme over the coming months, which will start by hosting six-hour long dedicated sessions during National Development days open to all registered club netminder aged from under 10 to under 18 level.

They are:

  • Colin Grubb – SIH Head of Goaltending Education – Former Fife Flyer, Paisley Pirate & Solway Shark, District Goalie Coach USA Hockey, Coach/evaluator at USAH State, Odessa Jackalopes (NAHL) Goalie Coach, Owner CGGoaltending
  • Colin Lees – SIH Coach, CGG Coach & John Russell – SIH Coach, CGG Coach, GB Ladies
  • Craig Douglas – Former Fife Flyer, KIHC Head Goalie Coach, CGG Coach, SIH Coach
  • Gary Russell – Former Glasgow Clan & Solway Shark, Solway Sharks Jnr Coach, SIH Coach
  • Calum Hepburn – Solway Sharks NIHL Treble winning NM, Solway Sharks Jnr coach, SIH Coach

SIH’s Head of Hockey Operations Jamie Thomson is delighted to see this programme take shape and believes it’s a wonderful opportunity for young goalies keen to learn.

“I am delighted with how this is shaping up already,” he said. “Colin is someone I’ve known over 30 years with a top class hockey CV both playing and now coaching.

Colin Grubb will spearhead the netminding programme this season

“His camps over here in the summer always get such high praise that it was an obvious choice for me to get him involved and I’m delighted to say he jumped at the chance.

“Colin’s role will be remote giving guidance and coaching to our team making sure the programme is providing the correct advice and experience for the young netminders.

“Colin Lees and John Russell also returning is a big plus for us. They first joined the programme when it had nothing on offer for our netminders and did a great job.

“Having both worked with Colin Grubb in the past it’s great to have their support and commitment on this.

“Finally, we have added Craig Douglas, Gary Russell and Calum Hepburn all exceptional netminders with experience at the highest level in this country having them on board completes what I think is the best netminding team in the country.

Colin and John Lees will also be involved

“It will be our goal to expand on this once we get up and running and offer more educational opportunities to club coaches and extra on ice sessions, but this is a great start.”

SIH Head of Goaltending Education Colin Grubb added: “My passions are goaltending and developing young people into better athletes.

“Being Scottish I am fully on board to help SIH and their new development program and can’t wait to get started with the team.

“Goaltenders will now have a specific ice session to work on the six fundamentals of goaltending, 95% of which happens for the puck is even shot.

“The team of coaches Jamie has put together will provide unparalleled on ice instruction for goalies of all ages.

Gary Russell, Craig Douglas and Calum Hepburn will be on hand to share their expertise

“I believe with this small, but important change that Scottish goaltending will improve dramatically and our national team’s coaches will be able to get an in-depth report from the goalie coaches including everything from technical ability to character.”

Sessions will take place on the following dates at Dumfries Ice Bowl, between 12 noon and 1pm, costing £10 per session.
