SNL Weekend Preview: Double-Headers and Five Games Across the League

Five Scottish National League (SNL) fixtures are on the schedule this weekend, with Dundee Rockets and North Ayrshire Wild both facing double-headers as teams look to strengthen their positions in the league table.

The unbeaten Rockets return from a weekend off with two games in as many days, while Wild face a demanding weekend against Edinburgh Capitals and Paisley Pirates. Elsewhere, Solway Sharks SNL welcome Kirkcaldy Kestrels to Dumfries, with both sides looking to secure valuable league points.

With unbeaten records to defend, teams looking to climb the table and others chasing their first victory, there is plenty to look forward to across the weekend.

Saturday 24 October

Aberdeen Lynx v Dundee Rockets

Dundee Rockets return to action on Saturday with a short trip to the Linx Ice Arena to face their nearest rivals, Aberdeen Lynx, in the first game of their weekend double-header.

The two sides last met in Dundee just a few weeks ago, when the Rockets claimed a convincing 9–2 victory. However, Aberdeen have since strengthened their roster, benefited from more time together on the ice and shown encouraging signs of improvement.

Last weekend’s 7–3 defeat to Edinburgh Capitals was a much closer contest than the final score suggested, with the Lynx remaining firmly in contention until the closing stages.

Dundee, meanwhile, have won all five of their league games so far. Their unbeaten record makes them favourites, but they will face an Aberdeen side that has grown in confidence and will have the backing of a passionate home crowd.

The Rockets will be determined to protect their perfect start, but could the Lynx be the team to bring their neighbours’ winning streak to an end?

North Ayrshire Wild v Edinburgh Capitals

North Ayrshire Wild begin a challenging double-header weekend when they welcome Edinburgh Capitals to Auchenharvie for the first meeting between the sides this season.

The Capitals arrive following a victory over Aberdeen Lynx last weekend and will be looking to collect another two points as they push towards the top of the league table.

However, the smaller ice pad at Auchenharvie presents a different challenge, with less space and time on the puck likely to make for a fast, physical contest.

For Wild, it is another opportunity to test themselves against strong opposition and build on the progress they have made so far this season. They will be keen to make home advantage count, particularly with another demanding fixture awaiting them on Sunday.

With Edinburgh chasing points at the top end of the table and Wild determined to make life difficult for their visitors, this could be an action-packed encounter.

Sunday 25 October

Dundee Rockets v Kilmarnock Thunder

The Rockets return to home ice on Sunday for their Halloween fixture against Kilmarnock Thunder, completing a busy two-game weekend.

Dundee will be targeting four points across the weekend, although even a maximum return would leave them in second place, with league leaders Whitley Warriors currently sitting on 16 points from nine games.

Thunder face another demanding challenge as they continue their season without a home rink. Having played four games so far, their young squad have had a difficult start, but will be determined to compete for the full 60 minutes against one of the league’s strongest sides.

Much will depend on how the Rockets emerge from Saturday’s encounter in Aberdeen, but they will undoubtedly be favourites on home ice.

With Halloween activities adding to the occasion, there should be plenty of entertainment both on and off the ice.

Paisley Pirates v North Ayrshire Wild

Paisley Pirates host their first home fixture of the season on Sunday as North Ayrshire Wild make the short journey to Braehead Arena for the second game of their weekend double-header.

It will be the second meeting between the teams this season, with Paisley taking a 5–1 victory in their earlier encounter after a closely contested opening period gave way to a stronger second-period performance from the Pirates.

Wild face a particularly demanding weekend, with Sunday’s fixture coming less than 24 hours after their clash with Edinburgh Capitals. The larger ice pad at Braehead and the physical challenge posed by Paisley will provide another test of their fitness and resilience.

The Pirates currently have eight league points from seven games and will be eager to use their first home appearance to climb away from the middle of the table.

For Wild, managing the demands of two very different opponents on consecutive nights will be crucial. With Paisley looking to make a strong start on home ice, the visitors will need to dig deep if they are to take something from the weekend.

Solway Sharks SNL v Kirkcaldy Kestrels

Sunday also sees Kirkcaldy Kestrels travel to Dumfries to face Solway Sharks SNL, with the teams meeting for the first time this season.

The Kestrels are still searching for their first victory after five games, although several of their performances have been more competitive than their results suggest.

Solway have recorded three wins from nine games and will view this home fixture as an opportunity to add to their points tally and improve their league position.

With the two sides yet to face each other this season, it is difficult to predict the outcome, adding an extra element of intrigue to Sunday’s encounter.

For Kirkcaldy, a first win would be a welcome reward for their efforts so far, while Solway will be keen to make home advantage count and add another victory to their record.

With both sides seeing an opportunity to secure valuable points, this could be one of Sunday’s most closely contested games.

With five games across the weekend, there are plenty of opportunities for teams to make their mark as the SNL season continues.

Whether you’re following your team at home or making the trip to an away fixture, get along to a rink this weekend and show your support. There is nothing quite like watching Scottish ice hockey live!
