Kirkcaldy coaching shake-up as King joins the Kestrels

Kirkcaldy Kestrels have kicked-off their summer signing announcements with an important change to their coaching set-up.

Steven Wishart will remain as the team’s head coach and he will be joined behind the bench by Fife Flyers legend Steven King.

The former Flyers forward played for his home town team for more than 20 years, mostly in the British Hockey League, British National League and Northern League.

King was a prolific points scorer during his playing career and his addition to the Kestrels’ coaching staff is an exciting development for the team.

“I’m delighted that Kingy has decided to come on board and help me at the Kestrels,” said Wishart.

“His knowledge and experience will be invaluable to myself and the players in an ever-improving Scottish National League.

“We are currently working away at putting together a competitive roster to compete well in the SNL, with the usual focus on youth complimented by some experienced heads.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to put on record my thanks to Daryl Venters, who over the past few years has been a great coaching partner.

“I wish him well with his new role coaching one of our junior teams.”

King last iced for the Flyers during the 2012/13 season and has since worked as a coach within the Scotland junior set-up.

He said: “I’m excited about the opportunity to work with Wish and all the guys.

“I had the chance to take in quite a few of the Kestrels games last season and was impressed with the talent in the squad, with a good mix of experience and youth.

“With the SNL getting stronger every season, it’ll be a greater challenge for both the players and the coaching staff, but one I see ourselves rising to and being competitive in every game.”

The Kestrels will begin announcing their roster for the 2020/21 season early next week.
