The dates for the NIHL North Cup Final between Murrayfield Racers and Whitley Warriors have been confirmed.
Murrayfield Ice Rink will host the first leg on Saturday, 22nd February (face-off 6.00pm), with the reverse fixture at Whitley Bay Ice Rink the following day (face-off 5.00pm).
The Racers defeated Solway Sharks in the semi-finals of the cross-border competition, with Callum Boyd’s last-minute winner sealing a thrilling 10-9 aggregate success.
Tony Hand’s side have already won the Stuart Robertson Cup this term and are challenging the Sharks at the top of the Scottish National League (SNL).
The Racers are also through to the last four in the Scottish Cup and have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the SNL play-offs, leaving them with plenty to play for.
Whitley are currently the favourites to win Moralee D1, with the North East outfit one point off top spot with three games in hand.
They recorded a 13-5 aggregate success over Billingham Stars in their last four tie, winning 5-2 on the road and 8-3 back on home ice.
An NIHL Management Group spokesman said: “Two iconic club names, both coached by iconic former players – what more could we want in a cup final?
“Murrayfield have made great strides in this year’s competition after making their debut last season. They pushed Solway close – twice – and beat Whitley in the group stage, so we knew they were capable.
“They were 3-1 up on Saturday and 3-0 ahead on Sunday and saw Solway fight back. The Racers rebounded on each occasion and snatched the win in the most dramatic fashion.
“Whitley are chasing a trophy treble and are on a great run at the moment. They just kept rolling in their semi-final against Billingham and were too strong for their local rivals.
“We’re certain the away section at Murrayfield will be a sea of maroon and gold for the first leg tie.
“We can’t wait to see Tony Hand and David Longstaff – both legends at club and national level – coach against each other over two hard fought games with some silverware on the line and the two rinks packed with passionate fans.”
