This season, Scottish Ice Hockey introduced changes to the U12 and U14 league structures, most notably the move to the Triplet format – 3-team mini-tournaments, with each game played over 2 × 21-minute periods (or a maximum of 1 hour).
The format was designed to make better use of available ice time, provide players with more opportunities to compete, and create a fast-paced, engaging environment.
A very high-level view of feedback so far suggests:
- 59% of athletes are in favour of continuation in the current format.
- 22% are open to continuation, provided some improvements are made.
- 19% are in favour of reverting back to the old format.
Highlights of the benefits reported so far:
- Playing two games in one day.
- A more competitive environment.
- Increased game time for athletes.
Highlights of areas to improve:
- Better management of breaks and rest time where possible.
- Addressing some of the logistical and application challenges that naturally come with a new format.
While the feedback has been largely positive, we have also received a small but important number of views suggesting the new format is not working. It is important that we understand these perspectives fully, so we can make the most informed decisions moving forward.
It was agreed from the outset that the format would be reviewed as we go, with a formal review before Christmas.
The feedback form has already been circulated to clubs, but we recognise that not everyone may have received it directly. We want to ensure all players and participants have the opportunity to share their views, which is why we are sharing it again here.
Please complete one form for each athlete participating in each event. This will not only ensure that every athlete’s voice is captured, but it will also allow us to track any variations in application or challenges from one event to another.
Your feedback will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Scottish Ice Hockey. Thank you for your support as we continue to grow and improve the game.
