Scottish Cup Semi-Final
Edinburgh Capitals vs Dundee Rockets
Edinburgh Capitals are through to the Scottish Cup Final after a fiercely contested second leg at Murrayfield on Friday night.
Dundee Rockets arrived holding a one-goal advantage from the first leg and made the perfect start, striking just 40 seconds after puck drop through Deniss Kontseus to stretch their aggregate lead in front of a packed arena.
The remainder of the opening period was hard-fought, with both sides matching each other shift for shift. Capitals captain Joe Lynch levelled the game three-quarters of the way through the period, setting up a tense night with everything still in the balance.
The second period remained tight, with limited opportunities at either end and neither side able to add to the score.
With the tie still finely poised in the third, Lynch struck short-handed with seven minutes remaining to pull the aggregate score level once again. No further goals followed before the buzzer, sending the contest to overtime.
It was Lynch who delivered the decisive moment, completing his hat-trick in sudden death to seal Capitals’ place in the final. The Scottish Cup semi-final treble further underlined his status as the league’s top goal scorer at a crucial stage of the season.
They will now face the winner of the other semi-final between Whitley Warriors and Aberdeen Lynx.
Scottish National League Round-Up
There was plenty of action across the Scottish National League, although league positions remain unchanged as the season approaches its conclusion.
Capitals extend their lead
Following Friday’s cup success, Edinburgh faced a demanding double-header on the road. They travelled to Kilmarnock Thunder on Saturday before making the trip to Solway Sharks on Sunday.
The league leaders delivered two emphatic performances, recording a 17–2 victory over Thunder and an 8–1 win against Sharks. The four-point weekend moves Capitals onto 51 points, five clear at the top, with four games still to play.
Warriors focus on second place and cup challenge
It was a weekend of narrow margins for Whitley Warriors, who edged a 4–3 win over Paisley Pirates on Saturday in overtime before falling 5–4 to Dundee Rockets on Sunday. Both contests were decided by a single goal.
While they can no longer win the league title, Warriors will be determined to maintain their second-place position as they look ahead to the playoffs. Attention will also turn to their Scottish Cup semi-final second leg against Aberdeen Lynx, with a place in the final still within reach.
Rockets remain in contention
Despite missing out on a place in the Scottish Cup Final, Dundee Rockets’ two-point win over Warriors could yet prove significant. They now sit on 41 points and have the most league fixtures remaining, with a potential 12 points still to play for. That keeps them in the title race alongside Edinburgh.
Tight at the bottom
Aberdeen Lynx secured a hard-earned win over North Ayrshire Wild in a contest that remained tight until the closing stages.
While it was a setback for Wild, the picture at the foot of the table remains close. The gap between Wild and Solway Sharks is just three points, and with Wild holding a game in hand over Solway, there is still opportunity for movement before the final standings are confirmed.
With league fixtures running down and cup finalists confirmed, attention is now turning toward playoff positions across the division. Details of this year’s Playoff Weekend will be released shortly as the season moves into its final phase.
