The 2026/27 Scottish National League season is under way, with four games across Saturday and Sunday providing the first look at how this year’s teams are shaping up.

There were opening wins for Aberdeen Lynx, Dundee Rockets, Whitley Warriors and Paisley Pirates, while the weekend also saw several younger players stepping up and gaining more SNL experience.

Aberdeen Lynx 11–3 Kilmarnock Thunder

Aberdeen Lynx opened their season with an 11–3 home victory over Kilmarnock Thunder, although the final score did not reflect how close the game remained for long spells.

Both clubs came into the opening weekend following disrupted preparations. Kilmarnock begin their season on the road while essential maintenance is carried out at their home rink, leaving the club having to secure alternative ice time for training. Aberdeen have faced similar challenges, with maintenance at the Linx Ice Arena taking longer than planned and the ice only reopening two days before Saturday’s game.

The Lynx also entered the new campaign with a younger-looking roster, with more players from the club’s junior system stepping into SNL hockey.

There was little between the sides in the opening period. The teams went into the first break tied at 1–1, with Aberdeen beginning to apply more offensive pressure as the period progressed but Thunder netminder Matthew Reid holding firm.

Aberdeen started to find their feet in the second. Three Lynx goals were answered by another from Kilmarnock, leaving the game still within reach at 4–2 heading into the final period.

An early power-play goal from Joshua Purvis extended Aberdeen’s advantage before Marc Fowley completed his hat-trick for Thunder to make it 5–3.

From there, the pressure Aberdeen had applied throughout the game increasingly began to tell. Kilmarnock had spent long spells defending and the workload was beginning to show as the third period progressed.

Thunder were also forced into a change in net when Reid left the game through injury, with 16-year-old Malachy Mitchell coming in to make his first SNL appearance.

Aberdeen pulled clear in the closing stages, including five goals in quick succession, before Euan Hanton rounded off the scoring to make it 11–3.

It was a strong finish from a Lynx side that grew into the game, while for Kilmarnock there were positives in the way they competed through the opening two periods despite their difficult preparation for the new season.

Dundee Rockets 9–2 North Ayrshire Wild

North Ayrshire Wild’s demanding opening weekend began at home on Saturday night, where they came up against a Rockets side packed with SNL experience.

Dundee were quick to put their visitors under pressure, with Phil Edgar opening the scoring on the power play less than four minutes after puck drop. Wild netminder Euan Simpson, who made the move from Dundee during the off-season, was kept busy against his former side as the Rockets established themselves in the offensive zone and kept North Ayrshire on the back foot.

The pressure increased further in the second period, with Dundee taking a firm grip on the game and scoring five times. Wild spent long spells defending and struggled to find a way through at the other end as the Rockets continued to dictate play.

Dundee remained in control through the final period, adding another two goals, but there was something for Wild to take from a difficult night. Sixteen-year-old Lennon Deeney accounted for both of North Ayrshire’s goals, finding the net twice against an experienced Rockets side.

Dundee’s power play was particularly effective, accounting for five of their nine goals. It was a clear demonstration of how quickly penalties can become costly against a side with the experience and quality to take advantage of the extra skater.

The 9–2 victory gave Dundee a strong start to their campaign, while for a young North Ayrshire side it was only the first half of a particularly demanding weekend, with a trip to Whitley Warriors still to come the following day.

Whitley Warriors 7–0 North Ayrshire Wild

Less than 24 hours after a difficult night against Dundee, North Ayrshire Wild were on the road for another major test, this time against a well-drilled Whitley Warriors side.

Wild made the trip with just 12 skaters and two netminders, with Saturday night’s game already in their legs, while Whitley had the benefit of a full roster.

Back between the pipes for Wild was Euan Simpson, who had faced a huge workload against his former club Dundee the previous evening. If that had been a demanding night, there was little respite at Whitley.

The Warriors applied sustained pressure from the opening puck drop, but Simpson was in excellent form. He repeatedly denied Whitley as the chances mounted and, despite Wild spending much of the period on the back foot, somehow the scoreboard still read 0–0 after 20 minutes.

It was an impressive opening period from Simpson and another early indication of what the summer signing could bring to North Ayrshire this season.

Whitley continued to press in the second and eventually the breakthrough came. Once it did, the Warriors began to make their pressure count, scoring four times as Wild were forced to spend long spells defending and struggled to create opportunities of their own.

By the third, the demands of the weekend were beginning to show. Wild were into their sixth period of hockey in two days, playing with a short bench on Whitley’s larger ice pad against a Warriors side able to roll a much deeper roster.

Whitley added another three goals to complete a 7–0 victory, with their patience and sustained pressure eventually rewarded after being kept off the scoresheet throughout the opening period.

For Wild, it brought an exceptionally demanding first weekend to a close. The results may not have gone their way, but Simpson’s performances across the two games were a significant positive, while a young squad gained more valuable SNL minutes against two experienced sides.

Solway Sharks SNL 1–3 Paisley Pirates

The closest contest of the opening weekend came in Dumfries, where Paisley Pirates had to wait until the closing stages to secure a 3–1 victory over Solway Sharks SNL.

Now entering their second season at SNL level, Solway gave an early indication of the progress they will be looking to make this year as they went toe-to-toe with an experienced Pirates side.

There was little to separate them through the opening 20 minutes. Paisley edged the shots on goal, but neither side could find a way through and the game remained scoreless at the first break.

The deadlock was finally broken in the second when Mylo Wylie converted on the power play to put Paisley ahead. Solway’s response was quick, with Stephen Adams finding the equaliser to bring the Sharks straight back into the contest.

Paisley began to apply more pressure as the period progressed, but Solway held them at 1–1, setting up a finely balanced final 20 minutes.

With both sides searching for the goal that could decide it, the game remained on a knife-edge deep into the third before Pirates captain Chris Turley finally broke the deadlock and put Paisley 2–1 ahead.

Solway had little choice but to gamble. With around 90 seconds remaining they pulled their netminder for the extra skater and pushed for an equaliser, but this time it was Paisley who took advantage, finding the empty net to make it 3–1 and finally put the result beyond doubt.

For Paisley, it was a hard-earned opening win in a game they had to battle right to the closing stages to secure. For Solway, there was no opening-night reward on the scoreboard, but pushing an experienced Pirates side so deep into the game was an encouraging start to their second SNL campaign.

Opening Weekend Complete

Four games completed the first SNL weekend of 2026/27, and already there were plenty of early talking points.

Dundee and Whitley showed the value of experience and roster depth, Aberdeen became increasingly effective as their game progressed, while Paisley had to work deep into the third period to secure their opening victory in Dumfries.

The weekend also provided opportunities for some of the league’s younger players. Sixteen-year-old Lennon Deeney found the net twice for North Ayrshire, while fellow 16-year-old Malachy Mitchell got his first taste of SNL action in goal for Kilmarnock.

For the teams on the wrong side of the opening results, there is plenty of hockey still to come. One weekend is far too early to draw conclusions, particularly with teams facing very different preparations, roster make-ups and opening schedules.

The SNL returns next weekend with another round of fixtures as the early league table begins to take shape.
