Scottish Ice Hockey (SIH) wishes to alert all players, officials, clubs, volunteers and supporters to the severe weather conditions forecast across Scotland this weekend (24th–25th October).
The Met Office has issued an amber warning for strong winds, covering mainland Scotland and islands off the west coast, from 9pm on Saturday 24th October until 9pm on Sunday 25th October. A yellow warning for wind is also in place from 12 noon on Saturday.
In addition, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has issued flood alerts, with heavy rainfall bringing the potential for localised flooding and further travel disruption.
These conditions may affect travel to and from scheduled games and other ice hockey activities throughout the weekend.
The safety and wellbeing of everyone involved in Scottish ice hockey remains SIH’s priority. We encourage all clubs, teams, officials and supporters to monitor weather and travel updates, plan journeys carefully and make informed decisions about travelling in potentially hazardous conditions.
Key Information for Participants
1. Monitor Weather and Travel Conditions
Stay informed about weather warnings, road closures, flooding and public transport disruption. Check travel conditions before setting off, allow additional time for journeys and consider whether travel is safe and necessary.
2. Game Postponement and Rescheduling Decisions
SIH will not directly cancel or reschedule games. Clubs are responsible for making these decisions collaboratively, with the safety of players, officials, volunteers and supporters taking priority. Any changes should be communicated promptly through official club channels. SIH will fully support decisions made on safety grounds.
3. Stay Updated on Fixture and Session Status
Clubs should ensure their communication channels are regularly updated with any changes to scheduled fixtures or activities. Players, officials and supporters are encouraged to check their club’s official website and social media channels for the latest updates before travelling.
4. Prepare for Potential Disruption
Strong winds and heavy rain may result in delays, road closures and difficult driving conditions. Plan ahead, carry appropriate supplies and be prepared to change travel arrangements if conditions deteriorate.
5. Follow Official Guidance
Follow advice issued by the Met Office, Police Scotland, Traffic Scotland and SEPA. Do not attempt to travel through flooded roads or ignore official warnings and restrictions.
National Development Sessions
SIH recognises that adverse weather conditions may prevent participants from travelling safely to National Development sessions.
Where sessions are scheduled, any changes will be communicated through SIH’s official channels. Non-attendance due to weather-related travel concerns will not affect future participation or team selection decisions.
