Capitals Deliver When It Matters to Clinch SNL Title

Edinburgh Capitals sealed the Scottish National League title in a weekend that had just about everything — twists, pressure, and a second chance that had to be taken.

They have been the team to beat all season. From the opening weeks, Capitals set the pace and rarely let it slip, losing just twice in regulation and once in overtime heading into the weekend. It’s been a long battle at the top with Dundee Rockets and Whitley Warriors pushing throughout.

Going into the weekend, the equation was clear. One point would be enough to clinch it, or a loss for Rockets would do the job.

It looked set up for Saturday. Capitals faced Paisley Pirates — a side they had handled all season — and although it was officially an away fixture, the game was played at Murrayfield, giving Capitals the chance to get it done on their own ice.

Pirates had other plans.

They matched Capitals and went toe to toe from the outset. Chances came, but nothing went in. Daniel McGowan turned them aside and the longer it stayed scoreless, the more it mattered.

Midway through the second, Pirates found the breakthrough. Marty Simpson struck, and it proved enough. Capitals pushed for a response but couldn’t find it, with Pirates holding on for a 1–0 win.

Speaking after the weekend, Edinburgh Capitals head coach Steven Lynch reflected on the missed opportunity on Saturday.

“It’s really disappointing we didn’t manage to get it done at home on Saturday night in front of our own fans,” said Lynch. “I thought the game against Paisley was one of those nights that comes around once a season — where you do everything right but just can’t put the puck in the net.

“We limited Paisley to 19 shots, and you can’t really ask for much more than that. I think we had 38 on their goalie, which kind of tells the story of the game. We just ran into a hot goalie and didn’t have our shooting sticks.”

Capitals still had a route that night, with attention turning to Dundee Rockets — but their 6–2 win over Aberdeen Lynx meant the title would not be decided on Saturday.

That meant Capitals would have to go again.

Second chance, and this time there was no delay.

Travelling to Whitley for the Warriors’ final game of their first SNL season, Capitals set the tone early. Chad Smith opened the scoring inside two minutes, and from there they took control. Whitley battled, but Capitals added again before the break to lead by two at the first interval.

The second period stretched the game. Three more goals followed, while Capitals kept things tight at the other end, leaving Whitley with too much to do.

At 5–0, it was a long way back. Capitals added three more in the third, with Olly Jardine scoring Whitley’s only goal in an 8–1 finish.

Lynch was full of praise for his side’s response the following night.

“I’ve got to be honest, I thought Sunday in Whitley Bay we were phenomenal,” he said. “The first two periods were the best since the Caps got back together four years ago. The effort, commitment, heart and application were there from start to finish.

“I don’t think anyone will disagree that we thoroughly deserved that victory. And it was great to wrap the league up after coming so close the last three years in a row.”

That was enough. Title secured.

After a weekend that tested them, Edinburgh Capitals delivered when it mattered most. Over the course of the season, they’ve been the most consistent side in the league — and showed exactly why when it counted.

Rockets, meanwhile, completed a strong weekend of their own. A 6–2 win over Aberdeen Lynx on Saturday kept the pressure on before a 10–0 shutout against Solway Sharks SNL on Sunday secured a four-point return and confirmed second place.

At the other end, North Ayrshire Wild edged Kilmarnock Thunder 3–2 in a tight contest — the closest Thunder have come this season. Just one point now separates Wild and Solway, the only positions still capable of changing heading into the final weekend.

While points can still shift elsewhere, positions across the table are now set aside from the battle between Solway and Wild, which will be decided next weekend.

From there, attention turns to the playoff quarter-finals — one home and one away — with matchups to be confirmed. And if this weekend showed anything, it’s that there’s still more to come before the season is done.
