Overtime Drama and Cup Progression Define Busy Scottish Ice Hockey Weekend

It was a busy weekend across Scottish ice hockey as the Scottish National League moved towards its mid-season point, with league positions and cup progression both on the line.

Scottish Cup

Progressing on aggregate against Paisley Pirates on Sunday, Whitley Warriors secured their place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals, where they will face Aberdeen Lynx.

Warriors travelled to Paisley holding a 4–1 advantage from the first leg. Pirates took a 2–1 win on the night, opening the scoring midway through the first period with a power-play goal from Bari McKenzie. Whitley responded early in the second period through Dean Holland to level the game, before Ryan Campbell restored Pirates’ lead. Despite sustained pressure and strong performances from both netminders, Pirates were unable to find the goals required to overturn the deficit, with Whitley progressing 5–3 on aggregate. Dates for the semi-final tie will be confirmed in due course.

League Action

Overtime featured heavily across the Scottish National League weekend, with several games decided beyond regulation as the table tightened further.

On Saturday, Edinburgh Capitals edged Whitley Warriors 5–4 in overtime at Murrayfield. Whitley led after the first period, but Capitals took control in the second, scoring three times. A third-period goal from Chad Smith extended Edinburgh’s lead, before Whitley rallied late with two goals, including a third of the night from Callum Queenan, to force overtime. Conner McNulty scored the decisive goal in extra time. Despite the loss, Whitley remain top of the table on 28 points, with Edinburgh close behind on 27 and holding multiple games in hand.

Dundee Rockets were the weekend’s biggest movers, collecting four points from two away games. On Saturday, Rockets defeated Aberdeen Lynx 4–2 at a sold-out Lynx Ice Arena. Lynx took an early lead through Jaydn Baxter, with Euan Hanton also on the scoresheet for the hosts, but Dundee goals from Deniss Kontseus, John Dolan and a power-play strike from Sean Beattie proved decisive.

Rockets followed that up on Sunday with a 5–4 overtime win away to Kirkcaldy Kestrels. The sides were level after the first period before Ross Henderson and Joe Somerville put Kestrels ahead in the second. Three goals in the third period appeared to have secured the points for the hosts, but a late goal from Scott Jamieson forced overtime. John Dolan struck 90 seconds into extra time to seal the win and lift Rockets into third place on 25 points.

Kirkcaldy Kestrels also picked up points earlier in the weekend with a 5–3 win away to North Ayrshire Wild on Saturday, keeping them firmly in the playoff picture on 21 points.

At the lower end of the table, North Ayrshire Wild and Solway Sharks remained separated by just a single point after sharing results across their double-header weekend. On Saturday, Solway Sharks claimed an 8–5 win away to Kilmarnock Thunder, pulling clear in the final period after a close opening two periods. On Sunday, Wild edged Solway 3–2, with Dylan Murray scoring short-handed and Jacob Woods adding a power-play goal before Struan Tonnar pulled one back late for Solway.

Kilmarnock Thunder remain without a point despite competitive performances, including a strong showing from netminder Matthew Reid against Solway.

With multiple games decided in overtime and others settled by narrow margins, the weekend once again highlighted the competitiveness of the Scottish National League as it approaches the midpoint of the season.
