Capitals Beat Warriors in Overtime as SNL Title Race Tightens

The Scottish National League title race took another twist at the weekend as Edinburgh Capitals claimed an overtime victory against league leaders Whitley Warriors, Dundee Rockets maintained their perfect record and the battle between the leading three sides grew even tighter.

There may have been no changes to the league table, but the picture at the top is becoming increasingly interesting. Whitley remain in first place with 19 points, although Dundee are just three behind with three games in hand, while Edinburgh are firmly in contention on 14 points, also having played three fewer games than the leaders.

It was the Capitals who made the biggest impact, collecting four points from two fixtures, including a dramatic overtime victory against the Warriors on Sunday.

Having recorded a convincing 18-1 victory over Kilmarnock Thunder at Murrayfield on Saturday, Edinburgh faced a very different challenge less than 24 hours later when they travelled to Hillheads.

The Capitals made an impressive start, building a 3-0 advantage before Whitley began their fightback. Ethan Dunn got the Warriors on the scoresheet as the home side worked their way back into contention.

Whitley eventually drew level at 3-3, setting up a tense finish with both sides pushing for the winning goal. Neither could find a breakthrough in regulation time, sending the contest into overtime.

Richard Hartmann Jnr proved to be the difference, scoring the decisive goal to secure a 4-3 victory for Edinburgh and complete a successful four-point weekend for the Capitals.

Despite Sunday’s disappointment, the Warriors still collected three points across the weekend, having secured a 7-1 victory away to Solway Sharks SNL on Saturday.

Whitley maintained their attacking pressure throughout the encounter in Dumfries, with Solway having to wait until the final period to get on the scoresheet through Ross Murray.

It was the beginning of a demanding weekend for the Sharks, who faced another of the league’s leading sides on Sunday when they travelled to Dundee.

The Rockets continued their impressive start to the season with a 6-0 shutout, extending their winning streak to eight games and remaining the only SNL side yet to drop a point.

Dundee took control with two first-period goals before adding three in the second and another in the third. Solway worked hard defensively but found themselves under sustained pressure against a well-organised Rockets side.

Facing Whitley and Dundee on consecutive nights was a difficult assignment for the Sharks, with both opponents demonstrating the strength that has kept them at the top of the standings.

Elsewhere, Aberdeen Lynx returned to winning ways with a 7-0 shutout victory over North Ayrshire Wild at the Linx Ice Arena on Saturday.

Aberdeen controlled much of the encounter, maintaining a consistent attacking threat while keeping the visitors off the scoresheet. As the game progressed, frustrations began to show and the physical exchanges increased, but the Lynx remained focused to complete a convincing home victory.

The result takes Aberdeen to 10 points from 11 games, keeping them fifth in the standings.

Paisley Pirates also continued their recent good form, recording a 4-2 victory over Kirkcaldy Kestrels at Braehead Arena on Sunday.

It was the second meeting between the sides this season, with Paisley taking the points on both occasions. Their previous encounter had been a closer contest, but the Pirates secured a more comfortable victory this time around.

The result marked Paisley’s second consecutive league win, keeping them fourth in the standings with 12 points from nine games.

Six games, 56 goals and an overtime contest between two of the league’s leading sides, yet not a single position changed in the SNL standings.

Whitley remain out in front, but with Dundee holding a perfect eight-game record and Edinburgh continuing to close the gap, the battle at the top is becoming increasingly competitive.
