The Scottish National League (SNL) has a busy weekend ahead, with six league fixtures taking place across Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November. All nine teams will be in action, with double-headers for Whitley Warriors, Edinburgh Capitals and Solway Sharks.
With Halloween celebrations taking place at several rinks, it’s set to be an exciting weekend both on and off the ice. There could be a few close encounters on the ice too, with twelve league points up for grabs and some important clashes that could shake up the standings.
The battle at the top of the table is beginning to heat up. Whitley Warriors currently lead the standings with 16 points from nine games, closely followed by Dundee Rockets, who remain unbeaten with seven wins from seven. Edinburgh Capitals sit third on 10 points, having played fewer games than either of the top two.
Both Warriors and Capitals have the potential to collect four points over the weekend, although their meeting on Sunday means at least one side will drop points.
That clash at Whitley Bay is arguably the standout fixture of the weekend. Both sides have lost just once in league competition this season, and this will be their first meeting of the campaign.
Warriors have been particularly impressive defensively, conceding just nine goals in nine games, but they will face a well-drilled Capitals side capable of challenging any team in the league. Home advantage could play a part for Whitley, although Edinburgh are unlikely to be intimidated by the occasion. With little separating the sides on paper, it could simply come down to which team performs better on the night.
Before Sunday’s meeting, Warriors face a trip to Dumfries to take on Solway Sharks, while Capitals welcome Kilmarnock Thunder to Murrayfield on Saturday evening.
Dundee Rockets will also be looking to capitalise on any dropped points when they host Solway on Sunday. The Rockets have maintained a perfect league record so far, and another victory would keep the pressure firmly on the teams around them. For the Sharks, it represents a particularly demanding weekend, facing the league’s top two sides on consecutive days.
Elsewhere, Sunday’s meeting between Paisley Pirates and Kirkcaldy Kestrels at Braehead Arena promises to be another close encounter. Just one goal separated the sides when they last met, and Kirkcaldy will arrive with renewed confidence after securing their first league victory of the season last weekend.
Pirates currently occupy fourth place with ten points and will be determined to make home advantage count. However, the Kestrels will be keen to make up for their narrow defeat in the previous meeting and build on their recent success.
Saturday also sees Aberdeen Lynx welcome North Ayrshire Wild for their Halloween fixture. Lynx sit fifth in the standings with eight points, while Wild are seventh with four. Both teams will be looking to return to winning ways, with Aberdeen aiming to end their two-game losing streak and Wild determined to close the gap on the sides above them.
With plenty of points at stake across the league, the weekend could bring further changes to the standings as the competition moves into November. Halloween activities at several venues will add to the atmosphere, giving supporters plenty to enjoy alongside the hockey.
