North Ayrshire Wild vs. Kirkcaldy Kestrels (Saturday)

The Kestrels, who have secured victory in 3 out of 4 league games played, are determined to solidify their position in the league table. Wild’s coach, Domenico De Simone, has a roster of talented young players. They have showcased their hard work through increasingly competitive scorelines against more established teams, notably their overtime win against the Pirates. With the young side gaining more game experience, they are sure to be one to watch.

Edinburgh Capitals vs. Aberdeen Lynx (Saturday)

Due to the Red weather warning that is in place the Lynx and Caps issued this announcement: “Aberdeen Lynx and Edinburgh Capitals are closely monitoring the rapidly changing weather conditions caused by storm Babet. Our utmost priority is the safety of both the players and the fans.
The final decision regarding the game will be made tomorrow morning at 9 am. However, if the red weather warning issued by authorities is still in effect at that time, we will have no choice but to postpone the game.
Your safety is of paramount importance to us, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this challenging weather situation. Please stay tuned for updates and the final decision at 9 am tomorrow.”

Dundee Comets vs. Dundee Tigers (Saturday)

This game is Postponed as Dundee Ice Arena is closed due to the adverse weather conditions.

Paisley Pirates vs. Dundee Tigers (Sunday)

Dundee Tigers return to the ice, this time at Braehead, to take on the Paisley Pirates. The Pirates clinched a 4-2 win in their September matchup, and they’ll be looking to capitalise on home-ice advantage in their quest for another victory. Tigers will be hungry for the win and the two points, so they will be giving their all.

Scottish Ice Hockey 23/4 Season: What to Expect

The Scottish Ice Hockey community is buzzing with excitement as we approach the 23/4 season. After the resounding success of the new SNL format which introduced 2 home and 2 away games, fans and players alike are eagerly awaiting the upcoming matches.

Last season Aberdeen Lynx took the SNL title, the first time in their club’s history and was pipped to the Playoff and Scottish Cup win by the Dundee Comets. But it really could have been any number of the teams making it through given how close most games were.

Clubs saw an increase in the number of fans attending games and the Lynx vs Comets sold out league winning game has had over 6k views and was streamed live with hundreds of fans watching. Which is great for the growth of our sport in Scotland.

Scott Campbell from Scottish Ice Hockey said, “I think I am the same as the rest of the people involved around the league in really looking forward to the 23/4 Season. The new SNL format, a great playoff weekend at Murrayfield, and Scottish Cup in Aberdeen, all made last season one of the most competitive we’ve ever had.

Delighted that we are retaining the 2 home and 2 away format, 3 of our clubs have engaged in a newly reformed Northern League with Blackburn Hawks, which is hopefully the start of more potential cross border competition.

After the success of last season, our playoff weekend will again be held at Murrayfield, thanks to Scott Neil and his team for all their work to make this happen.

The amount of games now being played will only improve our league, and give a real pathway for our junior to aspire to. We have a seriously competitive league where no result is guaranteed on any given night.

With some new players arriving from NIHL teams and from other areas too, it just highlights the growth we have witnessed. While there are still challenges, such as the limited ice time available to the Dundee clubs, it was pleasing to be involved in the collaborative approach the clubs all took in overcoming this obstacle.

Finally, I’d just like to wish all teams and their players the best of luck for the upcoming season, and look forward to seeing you all around the rinks.”

With the first games being played this weekend, the teams will be keen to make their mark and build from their success of last year. Don’t miss out on all the action, click the links below to add the senior pictures to your calendar.

Exciting Details for 23/24 National Program Announced

Scottish Ice Hockey (SIH) has announced the details of their national program for the 23/24 season. Jamie Thomson, Head of Hockey Operations, expressed his excitement about refreshing the national program and providing clubs with ample time to organise players and encourage participation in the upcoming season.

For the next season, the age groups will follow the traditional format, including under 11 (u11), under 13 (u13), under 15 (u15), and under 17 (u17). Additionally, the program will continue to have sessions specific to NM players, and there are plans to host at least one under 19 (u19) game, if not more.

The program will be held at the Dumfries Ice Bowl for the 23/24 season, and the SIH extends their gratitude to the facility’s management for their assistance in organizing the program.

One significant change is that the coaches will be instructed to maintain a larger squad of approximately 40 players, along with 4 NM’s, from September to December, without making any cuts.

Following this period, a two-day event will be hosted in Dumfries. During this event, each squad will be divided into East and West teams, and several games will be played to allow the coaches to evaluate the players in a competitive setting. Subsequently, the coaches will select a “20 + 2 Scotland Squad” based on their assessments.

To ensure participants are well-informed and can plan accordingly, the SIH aims to provide a pack detailing the games, tournaments, and other relevant information for the entire season during the first session in September. This will allow players and organisers to have a clear understanding of the goals and help them get organised from day one.

DATES FOR 23/24 SEASON

National Training Days:

  • September 24
  • October 29
  • November 26
  • January 21
  • February 25
  • March 31
  • April 28

SIH Squad Games:

  • December 28/29

It is important for clubs to note that no club fixtures will be scheduled on any of these dates, as they are dedicated to the SIH national program activities.

Successful Test Event Prompts Scottish Ice Hockey to Expand Competitive Youth Games

On Saturday 20th May Scottish Ice Hockey (SIH) ran a test event in Dumfries that saw Under 10s, Under 12s and Under 20s players from all over Scotland take part. The players were split into teams based on home club location then played each other over the course of the day.

The event was a trial with the hope that the games would be very competitive, and the result proved that theory correct. The day was deemed an overall success and something Scottish Ice Hockey will now look to expend on.

Head of Hockey Operations, Jamie Thomson, said, “East V West is something I’ve been wanting to reintroduce for a few years now and this event gave us a chance to prove it works.

We need our players playing more and they must play at a level that they are always having to battle to compete. It’s vitally important that this is our main focus when it comes to junior hockey moving forward.

These games also give coaches looking at national and international team selection a chance to see players actually play in a like for like situation, some players are fantastic on training and at trials but the best players should come to the top during these games so overall it’s win win for everyone involved.”

Comets win Playoff Championship

What a fantastic weekend of Scottish ice hockey and a great atmosphere at Murrayfield Ice Arena.

The semi-final on Saturday saw Aberdeen win 4-3 against Kilmarnock Thunder and Dundee Comets win 4-0 against Paisley Pirates, making it a Lynx vs Comets final on the Sunday.

The final was a thrilling game between the two experienced sides cheered along by their enthusiastic traveling support, that filled the arena with the sound of beating drums and let’s go chants.

The Comets got off to a strong start, with goals from Ben Brown and Sean Beattie in the first period, giving them a 2-0 lead. The second period was a physical one, with both teams racking up the penalty minutes, but Comets’ Stephen Eccles managed to net another goal, extending their lead to 3-0.

In the third period, much to the delight of the cheering Lynx fans,  Aberdeen found their form scoring two goals in quick succession to bring the score to 3-2. However, Ben Brown scored his second goal of the evening while on the power play, making it 4-2 with less than five minutes left on the clock.

The Lynx didn’t give up and kept up the pressure taking advantage of the power play as the clock ticked down.  A last-minute goal at 59.59 by James Demeo narrowed the scoreline, but it was too little too late to clinch the win.

Both teams have had a successful season so far, Dundee Comets winning the Scottish Ice Hockey Playoff Championship at the weekend and Aberdeen Lynx winning the Scottish National League title 2 weeks ago.

They will meet again on Saturday in the final for the Scottish Cup which is being held in Aberdeen. With both teams hoping to add another piece of silverware to their collection it promises to be another exciting match and not one to be missed!

Head of Scottish Ice Hockey’s senior section, Scott Campbell said, “As our SNL season is now almost concluded, what a finals weekend that was!

The ever improving Kilmarnock Thunder taking the league champions to the wire, Dundee Comets playing some fine hockey under Richard Hartmann, and a final that everyone thought was already over at the end of the 2nd period proving to be anything but over.

Credit to Aberdeen Lynx for their 3rd period efforts, but just falling short against a Comets team that for me were the worthy winners and strongest team this weekend.

It was great to see such a good blend of youth and experience on display this weekend. It was our first SNL season of 2 home and 2 away games and  what a difference it has made already, long may it continue.

Finally, a huge thanks to Scott Neil and team at Murrayfield Ice Arena, all our volunteers, and our on ice officials, without whom we have no game.

Good luck to all teams, senior and junior in next weekends Scottish Cup Final event, and I hope everyone has a great summer and is looking forward to September already as much as I am.”

Aberdeen Lynx and Dundee Comets to face-off in Playoff final.

In the Scottish Ice Hockey Playoffs, the two semifinals at Murrayfield today saw Aberdeen Lynx beat Kilmarnock Thunder 4-3 in a closely fought contest.

Kilmarnock’s Scott Cowan opened the scoring less than two minutes after the puck drop, but the Lynx equalised with a goal from Gary Kelly before going ahead 2-1 with a goal from Tom Johnston. In the second period, Thunder turned up the pressure and scored twice to finish the period 3-2. However, in the third period, the Lynx created more opportunities and netted two goals, with Mark Laing and Ben Edmonds scoring to seal the win with a final score of 4-3.

The second game was between Dundee Comets and Paisley Pirates, with the Comets dominating throughout.

Stephen Eccles opened the scoring for the Comets, with Ben Brown and Sean Beattie adding to the scoreline. Going into the second period, the Comets had a comfortable lead. Even though both sides dug deep, the second period only saw Dundee’s Ben Brown score his second goal of the game. In the last period, Pirates’ net minder put in a great shift defending against the Comets’ advances, but the Paisley side couldn’t find the back of the net, and the Comets won 4-0.

Tomorrow’s final between Aberdeen Lynx and Dundee Comets is too close to call, and both teams will be fighting hard to lift the trophy. It promises to be an exciting match, with the winner taking home the Scottish Ice Hockey Playoff championship.

Puck drop is 6pm and there are still tickets left on the door. Don’t miss out on what is set to be a fantastic game.

England juniors to play Scotland in May

SIH are pleased to confirm that the EIHA are bringing teams at u14 and u16 age groups to play the Scotland squads in May.

Jamie Thomson, SIH Head of Hockey Operations, said, “ These fixtures are a great opportunity for the best players in the UK to showcase what they have.

Over the years they have produced some quality hockey that to this day is still talked about. It’s something we want to keep alive for years to come.

After several positive conversations with the EIHA, I’m confident we are on the same page when it comes to the importance of these games and getting these squads together more often throughout the year”

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Aberdeen Fight for League Victory with Double Header

Get ready for an exciting weekend of ice hockey as four games are set to take place. All eyes will be on the league leaders, Aberdeen Lynx, who are three points ahead at the top of the table and have a double-header ahead of them.

Their first game on Saturday is a home fixture against Dundee Comets, who have won their last four games and will pose stiff competition for the Lynx. Currently sitting fourth in the league with 33 points, the Comets will be looking to climb up the standings and cause an upset against the league leaders.

The last time thee two teams met in Dundee Aberdeen took home a close win on the double point game.

Comets coach Richard Hartman said,  “It’s going to be hard game. Aberdeen are going to fight for the league win in front of a full house. It’s a smaller rink than Dundee, so it’s going to be more physical.

We are prepared, we have been playing really well and have a full squad. The only person missing is Mikey Ireland as he is recovering from a concussion.

We want to win for sure. We lost touch with the top of the table but still want to play well before the playoffs.

We need to do all the little things well and stick together like we did the last five games. We are playing really good, but Aberdeen will do everything to push for the title, so we have to play hard.”

The Lynx’s second game on Sunday is an away fixture against Kirkcaldy Kestrels, who have won their last five games and are in sixth place in the league with 28 points the same as Dundee Tigers.

On Aberdeen’s last visit to Fife Arena the Kestrels bagged the win in overtime 6-5. But with such close shorelines it’s all to play for.

With only one more league game after this weekend for the Lynx, this is a massive weekend for Aberdeen, and the league title could be won this weekend, depending on how the games play out.

In other matches, Edinburgh Capitals will be playing Dundee Tigers at Murrayfield. The Capitals are in second place in the league, just three points behind Aberdeen and eight points ahead of the Tigers.

With time running out the Capitals will be looking to secure a win and close the gap on the league leaders.

Capitals coach Stephen Lynch commented on their game ahead, “It’s a must win game that we have to be ready for. We obviously have one eye on other games happening around us but they’re out with our control. We have to focus on ourselves and make sure we have another two points at the end of the night.

Dundee are a tough team to play against who were high up the league for a long period. Recently they’ve slipped a little bit but we can’t underestimate them or they’ll make us pay.”

Kirkcaldy Kestrels will also have a double-header this weekend, with their first game on Saturday with an away game against North Ayrshire Wild.

North Ayrshire are 8th in the league with just eight points. The Kestrels will be hoping to secure a win and boost their position in the league to overtake the Dundee Tigers.

With the playoffs only one month away, the outcome of this weekend’s games could have a significant impact on the placing of the teams.

The race for the top spot in the league is incredibly close, and with so much at stake, this weekend’s ice hockey matches are sure to be thrilling and unpredictable. Don’t miss out on the action!

PREVIEW: The future is bright for the Comets

Fresh from their Scottish Cup semi-final win against the Kirkcaldy Kestrels, Dundee Comets will be heading to the Braehead arena to take on the Paisley Pirates in a league game on Sunday.

The Comets are 4th in the SNL table with the Pirates close behind in 5th,  both are level on 25 points but the Paisley side have 3 games in hand.

It’s an important game for both teams as they will be keen to close the gap between them and the top three.

Dundee Comets Coach, Richard Hartmann, said ahead of this weekend’s fixture, ” It’s a hard place to play, Glasgow. They have played well recently, but we are well prepared for them and if we stick to the system and the game plan we will be absolutely fine.

It’s the last few games of the season and we’ve been struggling with the lineup.  We’ve had some injuries and it’s been hard for the boys to play so many games. Every team has the same problems with injuries during a long season and we just deal with it. The guys who replace them are more than capable, they just step up.

We’ve been quite short benched, there’s not too many players in Scotland right now that can play at the higher level.  But we are very happy with our junior development programme, as we have a few young players coming through the system and it’s promising for the future.

Proceeding to the Scottish Cup finals is a great achievement for the club and especially for our young team. I have 4 under 18s in our squad, 3 are 16 year olds.  It’s great to have them in there for the experience.

When we played Fife we were very short, we had to adjust and played just two centre men the whole game, it was quite tough.  But they guys managed and it’s phenomenal to see them working as a team.”

Aberdeen Lynx will be looking for a two point win to regain the position at the top of the league table, after Edinburgh Capitals edged past them by 1 point after a double header last weekend.

Lynx Coach Jordan Leyden will be hopeful of a win against Kilmarnock Thunder on Saturday, as they have won the three previous games against the Kilmarnock this season.

But underestimate Thunder at your peril. With wins against Edinburgh Capitals, Dundee Comets and Kirkcaldy Kestrels, they have shown the capability to take on any team in the league.

The second SNL game on Saturday sees Kirkcaldy Kestrels, who are 6th in the league, play North Ayrshire Wild who are sitting in 8th place. The teams have met twice this season, with the Kestrels bagging the win both times.

With the end of the season only weeks away and the Playoffs around the corner, Kirkcaldy will be feeling the pressure to progress up the SNL table and close the three point gap between them and the Pirates.

The young team from North Ayrshire know the capabilities of the the Kestrels.  There is sure to be pressure on their D lines but they will be hoping to turn things around.

WEEKEND FIXTURES

Saturday

  • Kirkcaldy Kestrels v North Ayrshire Wild (7.15pm)
  • Aberdeen Lynx v Kilmarnock Thunder (7.15pm)
